to the Nyack Street Fair, with money in my pocket and a list of birthday gifts to buy.
It was an exceptional morning, sunny and breezy with enough clouds to keep things cool, and I was in a particularly cheerful mood as I pulled into a perfect parking spot and began to make my rounds.
Handcrafted wares beckoned from both sides of the street. I came upon a potter who makes jars with a word or a saying on the front. The jars had beautiful purple and blue glazes, and they lay before me
sparkling in the sun.
I started scanning the jars, thinking I would buy a purple one for my friend Peggy who loves almost anything purple. Words like LUCK,
COMPLAINTS and WISHES were mixed in with phrases like GUARDIAN ANGEL and KISSES AND HUGS. I was having trouble finding something I liked for Peggy.
It suddenly occurred to me that I wasn't looking for a jar for Peggy. I was looking for a jar for me. That shift changed everything. One jar seemed to lift itself up out of the display. I knew instantly that the
DESTINY jar was for me.
I brought my prize over to the artist. He looked at the jar and then looked at me.
"Ah," he said. "I don't make many of these so I'm always interested in who buys the DESTINY jar."
"It called to me," I said.
"Twelve dollars is a pretty good price for DESTINY, wouldn't you say?"
"A bargain!" I said as I handed him a twenty dollar bill and two singles.
He put the money in his pocket and started writing the receipt.
"Uh…that was a twenty I gave you."
He looked sad and said, "Oh. I'm sorry. I'm having such trouble seeing
these days. My eyes are getting worse and worse. I don't know what I'm going to do about it."
"Have you ever tried palming?" I asked. He shook his head. "It's very
soothing and healing for the eyes. I do it everyday, whenever I've been working on the computer or reading. It's so powerful that there have been cases of people curing their vision problems with palming. Pretty
amazing. Here, let me show you how to do it. First you rub the palms of your hands together."
We both did so.
"Now, put the palms of your hands over your eyes, blocking out all of
the light. Make sure you leave some room to breathe! And now, just let your eyes relax, open or closed, in the darkness."
We stayed there for a minute or two, each of us in our own quiet place.
Then it dawned on me. DESTINY, right here on Main Street. As we slowly and gently opened our eyes, I shared my insight with him.
"This is my DESTINY. To be fully in my life, open and meeting whoever
I'm supposed to meet, sharing what I've learned along the way."
We shook hands for an eternal moment. I set off into the rest of my day and my destiny.
