Positive Music to Soothe the Soul

IF I COULD GIVE YOU EVERYTHING

My philosophy in a nutshell...

If I could give you everything
I'd start collecting now -
I'd catch the sun in a jar
And let the moon above light your way.

If I could give you everything
I'd give your pain away -
I'd let the birds sing so loud
That the hurt would fade everyday.

So I give you all my love
It's taken years for me to feel.
It's all I have to give
And it's real.

If I could give you everything
You know I'm gonna try -
Every morning and night I'll be there for you
All the time.

I'll try to give you everything
The best that I know how -
With my heart full of love you can count on me
Starting now.

And I'll give you all my love
It's taken years for me to feel.
It's all I have to give
And it's real.

With my heart full of love you can count on me
Starting now, starting now.
If I could give you everything
If I could give you everything.

SPIRIT IS CALLING

This is the story of my own spiritual awakening. When we listen closely, spirit calls.

Spirit is calling,
Spirit is calling,
Spirit is calling
And I hear the call.

I walked a different road with a pebble in my shoe
What it was I did was not what I was meant to do.
Now I understand I'm supposed to follow you.

CHORUS

And I sang a different song
But the words did not ring true -
The music in my soul just wasn't coming through.
Now I understand I'm supposed to sing with you.

CHORUS

I thought I was alone
Now I feel your presence everywhere
Since the day I that looked up and also looked within
In prayer,
You were there.

Now I live a different life
Getting guidance from above
Letting any fear I have fly with the nearest dove
Now I understand that my true heart-song is love.

CHORUS

---

CAN YOU HEAR ME BUTTERFLY?

Hope is such powerful energy and nature is the perfect environment to hear the heart's longing.

Can you hear me, butterfly?
I'm singing to you with my heart.
Please take wing with all my dreams
And let my future finally start.

Can you hear me, morning light?
I'm praying you can feel my song.
Please shine through me all the day
And light the path where I belong.

Glorious is the springtime
Waking up from winter's hold
Magical new beginning
Wondering how each moment will unfold.

Can you hear me, midnight moon?
I long to sing in harmony
Please arrange the twist of fate
And finally bring my love to me.

Glorious is the springtime
Warming from the earth below
Joyous in celebration
Watching as each new seed begins to grow.

Can you hear me, butterfly?
I'm singing to you with my heart.
Please take wing with all my dreams
And let my future finally start.

GATHERING OF ANGELS

We are all connected, all made of the same angelic stuff. And each one of us is an important part of the whole, forever.

There was a gathering of angels,
Even seraphim were there
And the light was bright in all their shining eyes.
They were connected to the spirit
That connects all living things
And they offered this advice:

Be who you are
Say what you feel
Only the moment that you're in is real.

They say they're following vibration
To the place that brings them joy
And that freedom comes from following the heart
They were connected to each other
And every living thing
All of us, we have a part.

CHORUS

This is a gathering of angels,
Even seraphim are here
And the light is bright in all your shining eyes
You are connected to the spirit that
Connects all living things
And that spirit never dies.

CHORUS

RIVER SONG

Some days, life is smooth sailing. Other days, a storm appears out of nowhere to turn life upside down. You can learn to steer the boat...but not the river.

What will I do?
Where will I go?
Who will I be?
When will I know?

Life is like a river
And the steady flowof time
Means the journey's always changing
But at least I'm sure it's mine.

CHORUS

I set out on the river
With a suitcase and a friend
But I didn't see the rapids
That were churning up ahead.

The suitcase never washed ashore
And the friend was swept away
The sky was streaked with sadness
When I heard the North wind say:

CHORUS

Further down the river
All the reasons will be clear
But for now the lonely echoes
Call to mind my every fear.

CHORUS

---

LOVE

This song may be simple, but don't underestimate its power. One woman called her ex-husband and forgave him after singing this song.

Love is the freedom, love is the way
Love is a choice that we make everyday
Love is the answer to every fear
Love is the reason we're here.

ZACHARY AARON

There is a tribe in Africa that honors each new birth with a unique melody, taught to the entire village and sung each year on the child's birthday. I wrote this song when my nephew was born, and promise to sing it to him every year!

Zachary Aaron, welcome to Brooklyn
Everybody's happy that you came.
Zachary Aaron, life here in Brooklyn
Will never, ever be the same!

Hey, Little One, hey, Little One, hey.
Hey, Little One, hey, Little One, hey.

Will you sing like a bird?
Will you swim like a fish?
Will you do all the things
That your Mom and Dad wish?
Whatever you do, just be you.

CHORUS

Will you run like the wind?
Will you stand like a tree?
Will you write a great book
By the time you are three?
Whoever you are, you're a star.

CHORUS

Hey, Little One, hey, Little One, hey.
Hey, Little One, hey, Little One, hey.
Hey, Little One, hey, Little One, hey.

GOD IS THE SUN, GOD IS THE MOON

When you get right down to it, God is everywhere, in everything and everyone.

When you're weary of the darkness
And you're ready for the light
All you have to do is look around you.

God is the sun, God is the moon
God is the summer that's over too soon.
God is the sky, God is the sea
God is the light within you and me.

There's the light in the eyes of a child
The light in each stranger you meet
There's a light at the end of the tunnel
When the cycle of life is complete.

CHORUS

There's a miracle each moment
That's unfolding just for you
All you have to do is look around you.

CHORUS

There's the miracle each new morning
The miracle winter to spring
There's a miracle waiting to happen
At the heart of most everything.

CHORUS

SOME PEOPLE SAY (ABE'S SONG)

My first hospice patient, Abraham Press, graced this world and my heart with his twinkling eyes and gentle spirit. I wrote this song for his memorial service, and have had the honor of singing it at many services since.

Some people say that an ocean wave
Is separate from the sea.
But just as the waves are of the whole
You're part of me.

Some people say when you're gone, you're gone
But that's not what I believe.
I can hear you singing every song
Even as I grieve.

And the music that we shared
Sings forever somewhere.

Some people say that the stars above
Are nothing but some light.
But I know if I look up I'll see
A new star out tonight.

And the music that we shared
Sings forever somewhere.
And the music that we shared, my friend,
Sings forever somewhere!

AT THE END OF THE DAY

Losing someone we love is one of the deepest aches to soothe. But the pain is a powerful teacher and time is a great healer.

At the end of the day I'm alone again
Sighing and sleepy and sad -
The sunlight has stolen my energy
And images haunt me like mad.

And they come from everywhere
Then I feel his hand.
I can't see him anywhere
But he's forever and I understand.

At the end of the day I'm alone again
And nothing can shut out the pain.
The darkness descends like a velvet shroud
And completely surrounds me again.

But the night is comforting
For the dark reveals
All the deepest memories
Going in circles and spinning my wheels.

Day after day every way that I can
I make a life separate from his.
At the end of the day I'm always alone
No matter what day it is.

At the end of the day I'm alone again
I miss being part of a pair.
I've spent enough time in this solitude
And I'm longing for someone to care.

But for now his memory
Keeps me warm at night.
And I'm sad when morning comes
Taking my lover away with the light
Taking my lover away with the light.

WHERE IS THE LIGHT?

My friend Ann Marie B.W. Sawicki called me one morning with these lyrics. She'd never written a song before and said the words were dictated to her by Archangel Michael.

I walked in the darkness with the burdens of life
I knew anger and frustration, confusion and fright.
I saw hatred and loathing directed at me
Contempt and betrayal at the smallest of things.

Where is the Light at the end of the tunnel?
Where is the Light that should be shining on me?
Where is the Light to show me my footsteps?
Where is the Light that should be shining on me?

I talked with the healers who pointed me one way
I prayed to the angels who told me the same.
I searched for the answer in the Book of the Lord
But still I came up empty, no better than before.

CHORUS

Then in one brief moment
When my mind was all clear,
My heart was wide open and I found I could hear
It was quiet as a whisper, yet pure and so strong
The answer to my question
That I asked for so long...

I found the Light at the end of the tunnel
I found the Light it was bright as the day
I found the Light to show me my footsteps
It was there all along shining brightly in me.
It was there all along shining brightly in me.

SOFTEN 'ROUND THE PAIN

This song was inspired by the writing and teaching of Stephen and Ondrea Levine in their work with The Dying Project.

Soften 'round the pain
Let the holding go
Soften 'round the pain
Let the feelings float.

Soften 'round the pain
Holding in the heart
Soften 'round the pain
Let the healing start.

Soft as the rain falls to the ground
Soften the pain, free and unbound
Unbound.

Soften 'round the pain
Freedom from the night
Soften 'round the pain
Blend it with the light.

Soften 'round the pain
Breathe and it is so
Soften 'round the pain
When it's time, let go.

Soft as the rain falls to the ground
Soften the pain, free and unbound
Unbound.
Soften 'round the pain
Soften 'round the pain...

FOREVER IN LOVE

I wrote this song for my friends' Mary and Mike's wedding. May it grace sacred unions everywhere.

May you live in love forever
May you live forever in love.
May you live in love forever
May you live forever in love.

Be the anchor in safe harbor,
Be the shoreline to the sea.
Feel the magic in each other's arms
Feel free, feel free.

CHORUS

Love is the language of the heart
And it whispers your name.
To love someone is to learn their song
And sing it to them everyday.

Be the windsong and the morning sky,
Be the fire of the sun.
In the silence of each other's eyes
Be one, be one.

CHORUS

---

DANCE WITH ME, SPIRIT

Let the joy of this one move you to your feet!

Dance with me, Spirit - the music's begun!
Life is a dance that supposed to be fun.
Now that I found you I see that we're one -
So dance, dance, dance until life is done.

THANK YOU

The 15th century mystic, Meister Eckhardt, said, "If the only prayer you say your whole life is thank you, that would suffice." I was thinking about that one morning when this popped out:

Thank you, dear God, for the morning
Thank you, dear God, for the day
Thank you, dear God, for everything...
That's all I have to say!

Music In My Soul

I wrote this song over 25 years ago. Part of me knew, back in 1977, that music has transformative healing power.

They said it was a holiday, but I wasn't having fun -
My mind had drifted off again
To where we used to run.
Certain streets bring memories I'd rather not recall
I'd rather sing all the music in my soul
I'd rather sing all the music in my soul.

CHORUS

Everybody has some music in their soul
It drives you when you're younger
And calms you when you're old.

New York City wintertime,
The streets are cold and gray -
I wish somebody needed me each and every day.
But when someone finally notices,
I can't find words to say
I've got to sing all the music in my soul
I've got to sing all the music in my soul.

CHORUS

Well, I think I know how hard it is
To catch a falling dream
And I'm learning that the choices made
Aren't always what they seem.
I'm finding that the hardest part
Is learning to believe
I've got to sing all the music in my soul
I've got to sing all the music in my soul.

WELL BEING ABOUNDS (The Abraham Song)

This song is based on the wisdom of a wonderful group of spiritual teachers who call themselves Abraham (www.abraham-hicks.com), and share a positive and powerful way of being in the world.

CHORUS

Well well well being abounds
Well well well being abounds

The sun comes up every morning
The moon she wanes and waxes
The earth still spins on an axis
Which proves that the simple fact is:

CHORUS

Whatever your heart desires
The thought propels into motion
Vibration matches emotion
And lights up this magic potion

CHORUS

The signs all point to awaken
The outer layers are peeling
The inner heart has been healing
Let's sing it once more with feeling

CHORUS

Flowing freely, love surrounds and
Well well well, well well well
Well well well being abounds!

WHAT COLOR IS SPIRIT?

Originally written by request to help unify a multi-racial group of congregations, after September 11, 2001, the song became a healing reminder that we're all made of the same sacred stuff.

What color is spirit?
The same color as air -
It's the color of loving
When all God's children share.

What color is spirit?
It's the color of day -
It's the light of the morning
It's the love when you pray.

All it takes is faith and patience
And a heart that is willing to feel love.

What color is spirit?
It's the color of light
Shining deeply within you
Through the dark of the night.

What color is spirit?
Water's that color, too.
It's the color of me and
It's the color of you.

All it takes is faith and patience
And a heart that is willing to feel love.

What color is spirit?
The same color as air -
It's the color of loving
When all God's children share.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

I've been called a "chronicler of the inner journey," and this song fits that description. I wrote it to remind myself to trust the unfolding instead of trying to manage the process. And while there's sometimes pain and often uncertainty, my music and my faith help me see the bigger picture.

One day at a time
Following my footsteps.
One step at a time
Following my dreams.
One dream at a time
The journey is unfolding
Here before my eyes.

Out here on a limb
With no net except within
I sing my deepest darkest fears away.

CHORUS

And I trust in the fullness of time
To reveal all I need to know.
It's faith when the going gets rough
And the way goes so slow.

CHORUS

Moving through the pain
Time and time again
I let my music be the way I pray.

And I trust in the fullness of time
And believe that the way is clear.
And its faith when I can't find the light
And the shadows appear.

EASIER ROAD

This song is a reflection of a magical moment in time. My wonderful collaboration with Beddy Sinkoff realized it into being.

It was an unbelievable sunset
Painted on an autumn sky.
I felt Your presence everywhere -
So real it made me cry.

I feel Your spirit running through me
By the light of the crescent moon.
I hear Your voice in every breeze,
A sweet and peaceful tune.

It's an easier road knowing You're always with me
An easier road knowing I have Your love
Every day I pray,
Every mile is paved with miracles this way.
An easier road, an easier road.

Now in the stillness of the morning
And the darkness of the night
I know the road before me's safe
And the future's looking bright.

All my questions have an answer
And the answer's always "YES!"
I found the way to feel it all
Is believing I am blessed.

WHEN I WAS AN INDIAN

On an early morning walk, I carefully placed pinecones on the fresh wounds of newly felled trees. Strangely, I felt much better. I wondered why. A voice bubbled up inside that said, "When you were an Indian, you used to do many things like that." I asked what else I did, and the answer was singing to me by the end of my walk.

When I was an Indian
I lived on the land
Cooking my food, making clothing by hand.
And I loved every moment that nature had planned.

Way-hey, a-ho, way-hey, a-ho

When I was an Indian
I knew how to pray
Simply by being myself everyday.
And I listened to what all the birds had to say.

Way-hey, a-ho, way-hey, a-ho

And I walked the Red Road with all my relations
Honoring all I could see.
Praying for peace for the Indian Nations
Let me and my brothers and sisters live free.

When I was an Indian
I didn't know fear
I flew like an eagle and ran like a deer.
All the mountains stood proud
And the rivers ran clear.

Way-hey, a-ho, way-hey, a-ho

When I was an Indian
I couldn't explain
Why all the buffalo had to be slain.
And my tears flowed as one
With the warm summer rain.

Way-hey, a-ho, way-hey, a-ho

And I walked the Red Road with all my relations
Honoring all I could see.
Praying for peace for the Indian Nations
Let me and my brothers and sisters live free

When I was an Indian
Spirit came through -
I didn't say much but my words were all true.
And I speak the truth now, you were Indians, too.

Way-hey, a-ho, way-hey, a-ho

OUR SONG

I spent many years alone on my journey, always certain I would meet my life partner at the right moment. I'm happy to say it's the right moment.

I've been waiting for a long, long time
To feel the way
I feel today.

Something happened when your heart met mine
The two as one
Love has begun.

How the Universe
Reverberates with song -
Oh, it makes my heart glad
You sing along!

Breathing in each other's open space
So much to share
Even the air.

Hand in hand, we watch our dreams unfold
And what we see
Is what will be.

CHORUS

And if ancient shadows flicker
We can both turn toward the light,
Keeping sacred all the secrets
That we share into the night.

Merged and melted like a sterling heart,
This love with you
Is deep and true.

Now forever isn't long enough
To feel the way
We feel today.

HEAVENLY UNION

I wrote this as an anniversary song for two friends of mine. With a few minor changes, it became a love song for all lovers, for all kinds of anniversaries.

So many days
So many moments shared
So much of you
In everything I do
You make my life come true

So many miles
So many country roads
So much to do
Sharing everything with you
Keeps the world forever new

Being together, forever in love
This heavenly union's a gift from above

So many words
So much I want to say
Where do I start?
From the bottom of my heart
Loving you is the best part
Being together, forever in love
This heavenly union's a gift from above

CHORUS

So many days
So many moments shared
So much of you
In everything I do
You make my life come true

ANGELS ARE DANCING

This song is dedicated to two earth angels in my life: John Sackett, who first whispered the words "Angels are dancing" to me, and Mary Ellen Angelscribe, (www.angelscribe.com), who opened the door to love in my life in so many ways. Co-written with Beddy Sinkoff, this song proves that it is indeed possible to work and play at the same time!

Always there, everywhere
Listening to every prayer...

Angels are dancing rainbows round the sun
Spinning their magic, blessing everyone!
Angels are dancing, you can feel it, too -
Angels are dancing love to you.

Angels are smiling wanting us to see
We are all spirits longing to be free!
Angels are smiling, you can see it, too -
Angels are smiling love to you.

Angels are singing, listen to the breeze
Heavenly voices harmonize with ease.
Angels are singing, you can hear it, too -
Angels are singing love to you.

Always there, everywhere
Listening to every prayer
Feel the love in their care
Heart and soul.

Repeat 1st verse

ON THE OTHER SIDE

When I take my music to the bedside of a hospice patient, I know our brief but deep connection is both limited and eternal. This song expresses a whole range of feelings, to help me work my way through these sacred experiences. It isn't for any one person, it's for all of them.

Seasons come, where do they go?
First the sun and then the snow.
Why is it so hard letting go?
Will I feel you on the other side?

Journey well, my dear old friend -
Feel my love right through the end.
There's a light around the bend
Where I'll see you on the other side.

The moments just after sunrise
When the day is fresh and new -
I think of you
And that's all I want to do.

You were here, and now you're gone
Leaving me to carry on.
Some days I just can't go on
Then I feel you on the other side.

A butterfly at my window
Or I hear our favorite song -
I sing along
With the feel of you so strong.

Seasons come, where do they go?
First the sun and then the snow.
Though it's still so hard letting go
I can feel you on the other side
Oh, yes I feel you on the other side
Oh, how I feel you on the other side.

IT'S ABOUT JOY

Co-writer Beddy Sinkoff and I were headed home from a music workshop one evening, filled with excitement and optimism. We had what can only be described as a peak experience, and the mystery of how the Universe works came into focus. This song was born in that alchemical moment.

Letting go of yesterday, I wake up from the dreams - Nothing's ever as it was - or so it seems.

So I focus on the moment
For what it is and where I am.
There's no time like the present
For believing that I can!

It's about joy, it's about love
It's about faith and trust and guidance
Sent from above.
How can I be sad when it's You I'm thinking of?
It's about joy, joy, joy, it's about love,
It's about love.

Tomorrow's full of promises
I'm not allowed to know -
How the future will unfold, or where I'll go.

So I focus on the moment
For what it is and where I am.
There's no time like the present
For believing that I can!

ALL THERE IS

My friend, Kadar Weyrick, sent me these lyrics that came to him during a meditation. As soon as I read them, I sat down with my guitar and the music wrote itself. There's no Tower of Babel when the language is love. It's all there is.

What can I call You, God, today?
What do all religions say?
Telling in so many ways to call You
All there is is love
To call You
All there is is love
To call You
All there is is love
To call You
I call you love!

What do You call me, God, today?
What do all religions say?
Calling in so many ways
You call me
All there is is love
You call me (3x)
You call me love!

What will You teach me, God, today?
What do all religions say?
Teaching in so many ways
You teach me
All there is is love
You teach me (3x)
You teach me love!

Where will I find You, God, today?
What do all religions say?
You appear so many ways
To give your love
All there is is love
You give it (3X)
You give Your love!
All there is is love
I feel it (3X)
I feel Your love!

All there is is love, all there is is love!

UNSEEN BLESSINGS

Someone once told me that singing your prayers is like praying twice. This is my morning prayer and evening lullaby. My highest joy is in expressing gratitude and love, morning and night.

Thank you for the day before me
And the one behind.
I believe you do adore me
Body, soul and mind.
Thank you for a thousand things
Each and every day.
Thank you for the unseen blessings
Already on their way.
